TRINCULO is a Voyager 38 designed by Angus Primrose and built in 1988 by Trident Marine. Build number 51. She is registered on the Part 1 British Registry of shipping, Official no. 710130 originally at the port of Ipswich. Barrie has now transferred her port to Fleetwood. Registered Tonnage 16.10. We purchased her in May 2006 and was owned 32/32 shares by Barrie and myself, until August 2011
She is described as a motor sailer with a Volvo MD31A diesel engine delivering 62 hp. (46.25 KW). The basic design is for a ketch rig, however, Trinculo was built with a mast head sloop rig. The hull and deck is GRP with an overall length of 11.6 m. (38’ 4’’), water line 9.5 m. (31’2’’), beam 3.96 m. (12’11’’) and draft 1.52 m (4’11’’). Design displacement: 8500 kgs. Ballast 3360 kgs.
She has a deck saloon with all round visibility, which encompasses the Galley and Navigators station. Their is sleeping accommodation for six persons in three cabins with a possible further two in the saloon. Two separate heads; one forward with shower and one aft.

She was purchased in good condition, with an indicated 3582 sea miles and 1299 Engine Hrs. logged since new. She was however lightly equipped, and for the sail from Hamble to Fleetwood, we borrowed a tender and other equipment.
We are now very close to the standard we require and this is described below.
Sails and Rigging
Masthead sloop with anodised aluminium mast and twin spreaders. Single cap and intermediate shroud. Twin lowers and split backstay. Boom with telescopic (gas strut) kicker controlled from cockpit through a clutch.
Furlex roller furling genoa and Kemp mainsail in-mast reefing. Mast halyards through triple clutches to Lewmar 24 mast winch. Mainsail control lines led aft to top of coach roof through triple ‘Spinlock’ XAS clutches to a Lewmar 16 self tailing winch.
Deck and Safety Equipment
45 lb. CQR anchor with approx. 35 mtrs. chain & 12 mtrs. of warp. 20 kg, Bruce anchor with approx. 20 mtrs. chain & 20 mtrs of warp; on a double bow roller. Seawolf electric anchor windlass leading to double chain locker.
S.S. Pulpit with port/stbd. Navigation lights. Fairleads in toe-rail and cleat each side.
. Deck laid with non slip panels. Teak grab rails on coach roof and deck cabin. Centre cleat each side.
Bridge deck with access companionway forward to deck cabin. Acrylic washboards.
Mainsheet controls across bridge deck.
Webbing jack stays along full length of each side deck.
Three fire extinguishers; in fwd companionway, galley, & aft cabin. Fire blanket in galley.
Automatic FM 200 fire extinguisher in engine bay
First aid kit and set of offshore flares. Set of soft wood bungs.
Carbon monoxide detectors in forward passage and aft cabin. Smoke detector in deck saloon.
A deep safe self draining cockpit.
Manual (operated from cockpit) & automatic electric bilge pumps draining deep keel well. High bilge water alarm
To starboard a large cockpit locker, with diesel generator, and to port a self draining, twin gas bottle locker.
Binnacle with compass, engine & bow thruster controls and Witlock wheel steering. Removable folding cockpit table.
Engine instrument panel to port. Autohelm control & command mic.to stbd.
S.S. centre aft cleat. Port & stbd. S.S.cleats with fairleads in toe-rail.
Two horseshoe lifebouys, one with light, one with Dan-bouy.
S.S. Pushpit with gate in transom to s.s./ teak slatted, bathing platform with s.s. ladder.
Transom hung Kedge anchor, with chain & warp in chain locker below cockpit floor
Avon 310 RIB tender with Marina 5 outboard motor carried in davits at the transom..
Beaufort Swiftsure 6 person Life raft, (serviced April 2007), carried above the tender in a purpose built cradle.
Stern navigation light. Secondary VHF antenna, serving AIS & secondary VHF, on aft rail of life raft cradle.
Mechanical & Electrical Systems
Vetus 55kgf bow thruster powered by an independent 125 amp/hr. battery.
Volvo MD31A diesel engine.. Driving a 3 blade variable pitch (Bruntons Autoprop) propeller, with a Spurs line cutter
Separate 12 volt 75 amp. hr. engine start battery.
Services supplied by two 12v. 240 amp hr. Batteries and 1500 watt 230 volt Inverter.
All batteries are charged by the engine alternator via a Sterling Alternator to Battery charger with ProDigital remote control, and by shore power/generator charging, via Sterling 40 amp. power supply/charger. The Service batteries are also charged by a Rutland 913 Wind generator. Battery state gauge monitoring engine & services batteries. .
!.9 kva. Diesel powered 230 volt generator installed in aft cockpit locker.
Diesel: 270 ltrs. in one tank with fuel quantity gauge.
Water: 590 ltrs. in two interconnected tanks; with interconnect SOV.,plus 40 ltrs. hot water calorifier, heated from the engine, Eberspacher water heater or 230 volt immersion heater. Pressurised hot & cold water system serving galley and both heads.
Holding tank, 200 ltrs. approx., with manual pump out, serving forward toilet. Change over valve for direct discharge or to holding tank.
Lopolight LED navigation light at masthead with Windex/VHF antenna, Glomex TV aerial & Sea-me Radar enhancer.
RADAR Tx/Rx on mast with Steaming/deck light and hailer/fog horn loudspeakers.
Anode protection to Bow Thruster, Propeller,Line cutter and main ships anode, with Safeshore Marine Galvanic Isolator.
Forward Cabin.
V-berth with infill for double. Locker space above and below berths. Hanging locker on port side.
Fan assisted radiator. 12 volt and 230 volt outlets.
Cut-off switch for bowthruster/windlass. Lewmar hatch above
Heads & Shower.
To port, with hot & cold wash basin, toilet plus separate shower compartment.
Panel Radiator. Shaver socket. Locker.

To starboard with two single bunk berths. Lockers and hanging locker.

‘L’shaped seating on port & starboard sides with large folding centre table. Bottle storage in table centre. Large lockers under seating and behind backrests.
On forward face of Nav. Console:

Fan assisted radiator.
TV antenna outlet. 12 volt and 230 v. outlets.
Engine access under floor. Lewmar hatch above.



Galley.
Portside, aft of saloon,opposite navigation station, is a ‘U’shaped galley.
Twin s.s. sinks with covers. H&C water. Manual standby filtered water pump.
Storage for crockery above. Formica work surfaces. Top opening large refrigerator/cold box.
Flavel two burner cooker with oven & grill with sliding top over for extra work surface. Lockers under work surface for pots, pans and general storage. One 230v. outlet. Gas alarm.
On starboard side, access down to aft cabin with Nav. Station to the side. Locker under nav. seat.
Access to cockpit over bridge deck through main hatch.

Port side double berth with lockers alongside & under. Two drawers centre, forward alongside berth and two further large lockers at centre and on port side.
Fan assisted radiator. TV,12 volt & 230 volt outlets.
